Key Information

There is a global shortage of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) professionals, particularly female professionals in Afghanistan who often have less access to secondary and higher education or the labor market. Gender differences in STEM do not start at higher education or the labor market, but secondary school. The Girls in Science project will provide innovative, 21st century science education opportunities and awareness for adolescent girls in 13 government schools (grade 7-12) of Baghlan province, Afghanistan, where there is a high number of girls’ only schools with functional science labs. In doing so, the AKDN will begin to transform the future of science education in Afghanistan by equipping Afghan teachers and students with the necessary skills, knowledge, attitudes and values to not only love to learn science, but begin to make significant progress in advancing scientific inquiry, discovery, and equitable science education for all.
